Organic waste sorting in Food Court

Organic waste sorting was part of the course 12135 Waste management at Roskilde Festival.

In 2017, Roskilde Festival created a test area in the Food Court to collect organic waste for biogas production. In the area, the food stalls used compostable materials from plates, cups and cutlery, which were collected together with food residues in containers behind the food stalls.

The purpose of the project is to sort remaining foods and compostable consumables from non-compostable materials such as metal, plastic and glass. From the collected data, the impurity of the waste can be calculated and used to evaluate the potential of the waste to be used in biogas production.

It turned out that 83% of the waste can be absorbed in a biogas plant, which is a good score as a biogas plant can withstand a certain amount of unclean waste. The group estimates that waste from Food Courts waste bins can be used well for biogas plants.
