Concept for off-grid stands

The project consists in the design of a system that aims to allow the food-trucks in the Roskilde Festival area Silent and clean to be powered by renewable energy and without the need to be connected to the far fossil fuel-based electricity generators.

To do so, a combination of photovoltaic panels and small wind generators will be used to charge day and night the electrochemical energy storage (battery).

Since the food stands have a limited available space, the major challenge consists in minimizing the area covered by the solar panels and the wind turbine, considering a trade-off with the size of the expensive battery. The system must satisfy the energy needs of the food trucks throughout the whole festival.

Furthermore, due to the short duration of the festival, the whole system must be set up on a structure easy to mount and dismount in few hours, compatible with different kinds and size of food-trucks.

During the RF19 edition, the focus is on collecting the fundamental data needed to size and optimize the system design. The data regards the power consumption of the trucks and the sun and wind energy potential on site. The solar potential will be taken from the records of the weather station in DTU Risø campus. The wind speed and direction will be constantly recorded in the Silent and Clean area at two different heights, to find the minimum at which there is a consistent and sufficiently stable wind generation potential. The power consumption of three food-trucks is constantly monitored and recorded in cloud, using a specific equipment.

The work carried out during the festival resulted in the collection of data that will be used to design a system able to provide the power necessary to satisfy the needs of a food-truck only from renewable energy. The data will be used as input for an optimization program, modelling the energy behavior of a food truck. In particular the input will be:

  • the power consumption of the food truck
  •  the wind generation potential
  • the solar photovoltaic generation potential

By changing the input to the program, the model can be adapted to different food trucks i.e. power needs, or areas of the festival. The results will let the festival know wether a turbine and solar panels can provide the electricity that an off-grid food truck need.
