Waste Managment - Unintended trash

This pilot project will investigate the implementation of a new food waste monitoring system in food stalls at Roskilde Festival. The aim is to gather insights into what challenges the stalls experience when having to separate their food waste and also to gather data on the amounts of food waste the stalls create.

Food stalls on Roskilde Festival prepare dishes to be sold to the festival guests. During quiet periods ready-to-eat food is left out for a long time and ends up wasted. This food cannot be donated to volunteers or charity because of hygienic issues and ends up as money out the window for the hard working food stalls.

Rub og Stub, an NGO fighting against food waste, has requested to test a new tool developed by the company E-smiley, on Roskilde Festival to gather data on the amount of food wasted. The students used the E-smiley equipment to map out the particular food wasted at different stalls through daily weighing. Furthermore, volunteers in the food stalls will also be surveyed about their experience to evaluate the user friendliness of the system.

The valuable insights from the project will be used in future decision making for whether Roskilde Festival will implement the food waste monitoring system across the festival. This project is aligned with the SDG “Responsible consumption and production” to prevent overproduction of food which has a huge economic and environmental impact.
